"The Princess Comes Across" is a Carole Lombard film that tends to get lost in the shuffle (she's shown with Fred MacMurray above in a promotional still). It's certainly a competent movie, with some funny bits to complement a maritime murder plot, but it never quite equals the sum of its parts.

Now, another still from the film has popped up, showing Lombard with veteran character actress Alison Skipworth, who plays her mother. (Carole is passing herself off as a "princess" from Sweden seeking a career in the movies; she's actually Brooklyn chorus girl Wanda Nash.)

It's an original 8" x 10" with a little wear and tear, as you can see. There also are some old tape remnants on the back.

The opening bid is $10.95, and the auction closes at 11:35 a.m. (Eastern) Tuesday. To bid or learn more, visit http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Carole-Lombard-in-The-Princess-Comes-Across-8-x-10-Movie-Promo-Photo-/331462198327?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d2cafc437.

Back in 1969...

In Australia..I was 11 and visiting an auction at an old house in my neighborhood, a Spanish mission type home that was called Somerset, and I found a 1936 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. While leafing through it I saw an advertisement for upcoming Paramount attractions, one of which was The Princess Comes Across. The name Carole Lombard was completely unknown to me. I asked my mum was she still alive. No, she had died in a plane crash. Well, that started it. I've been obsessed with her ever since. Your blog is one of pure devotion and I scarcely know how to compliment you adequately on it. I have learned so much more since that day and I'm still learning...what an exceptional woman Lombard was, she has left us all lessons on how to live but at the same time I can still imagine her saying for Chrissakes get over me! Hard, isn't it?

as to the film itself...

For years I had speculated on it and when I finally did see it I was pleasantly surprised. She is a delight, it has a fabulous score and marvelous orchestration..but..the murder mystery adds nothing to it. I wanted more of the bogus princess. Still..I rate it highly in her inventory, far more entertaining than Fools For Scandal for instance and a hell of a lot better than the irritating Mr and Mrs Smith, but that's just my opinion.
