carole lombard clark gable 1941a

It's sometime in 1941, and Carole Lombard and Clark Gable are making one of their by-now infrequent excursions into Hollywood nightlife. But note what Gable is wearing on his little finger...it's this, given to him by Lombard:

This was part of the recent "There's No Place Like Hollywood" auction co-sponsored by Bonhams and Turner Classic Movies; it went for $50,000.

Some more about the ring, from Bonhams:

"14k gold men's ring with ribbed center band. Gable typically only wore rings on his pinkie finger, which would account for the ring's smaller than expected size. Gable and Lombard married on March 29, 1939 and are remembered as one of the most iconic Hollywood couples of the period.

"Provenance: Accompanied by a typed letter signed by Kay Gable."
And here's said letter, plus envelope:

According to Bonhams, "Lazier was a well-known collector of militaria who often wrote to famous people asking for donations to his military museum."

Six weeks after writing this letter, Kay Gable herself would be gone. It says something about the lady and her regard for not only Gable, but Lombard, that she refused to sell such a personal item of Clark's.

Tomorrow, more memorabilia concerning Clark and Carole.

It does not look like the same ring as in the picture. What Clark is wearing looks to me like a signet ring .

Clarke's Wedding Ring

I have to agree with the previous comment, this so called wedding ring is definitely not the one Clark is wearing in the photo. Also I find it hard to imagine that Carole would give Clark a pinky ring for his wedding ring....Pam

His ring finger was supposedly misshapen due to an old break so he wore his wedding ring on his pinky. That does look like a signet ring.

Wedding Ring

Clark Gable is wearing a signet ring in this photo, And his ring finger looks fine and doesn't appear to be damaged.

If you look at the photos taken the day after their wedding, Carole is wearing a wedding ring, but Clark is not.

Likewise if you look at the wedding photos of Jacqueline Kennedy and John Kennedy, Jackie is wearing her wedding ring, JFK is not. After her marriage photos always show her wearing her wedding ring, I have yet to find a single one of JFK wearing his.

Carole and Jacqueline Kennedy both shared the hope that they could win the love, respect and the loyalty of their husbands. They may have won their love, but, sadly, they did not win their respect and loyalty.

Guess Lyn Tornabene got the finger info wrong then. And Gable is wearing a wedding band in the day after photos. Can see it most clearly in the photos taken sitting on the steps of the house.

Clark never, EVER wore a wedding ring in his private life. In movies perhaps, but never in private life.
