Gable was already well acquainted with the St. Cloud house; he had spent plenty of time there during his three-year affair with Carole. (Lombard had moved there largely because of her relationship with Gable, believing its relative seclusion would be better suited for being with the still-married Clark than her former home on the western edge of Hollywood Boulevard.)
