Lombard, living large...literally

What on earth has happened to Carole Lombard, whom we all thought was between 5-foot-2 and 5-foot-6? Did she wish to become the biggest star in Hollywood, only to have her fairy godmother misunderstand what she meant? Did she inadvertently consume some magic "EAT ME" cookies from Paramount's "Alice in Wonderland," intended for its star, Charlotte Henry? Did some classic movie-loving alien travel back in time to pull an "Attack Of The 50-Foot Woman" enlargement on his favorite star? (Actually, since each "HOLLYWOOD" letter stands 45 feet high, the colossal Carole apparently measures about 200 feet in height, taller than most of the buildings in downtown Los Angeles in 1933.)

But don't worry -- we can explain the secret behind Lombard's astounding growth to "fee fi fo fum" size (or should that be "fee fi fo femme" size?)...

...special effects, something Hollywood has long been famous for. We've done a number of Carole Lombard banners for the Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney over the past few years -- but we've never tried any trick photography before. This time, with the help of Tally Haugen, we've created a supersized Carole, looking down at the town she called home. Here's the original photo, from which Tally superimposed Lombard as a gloriously glamorous giantess, towering above the Hollywood hills...

Lombard's second-round match comes sometime Wednesday, in the "Funny Ladies" semifinal of the 1930s bracket against Jean Harlow (another beauty who cast a large-scale shadow), and she won't make it easy for Carole. This will be a match of the titans, King Kong vs. Godzilla if both were gorgeous blondes, and Lombard will need all the support she can get. You can cast your vote at http://poohtiger-allgoodthings.blogspot.com -- and please vote in the second-round matches that are currently going on in this and the other brackets, if you haven't done so already.

Oh, and to mega-Carole, please be careful where you tread. Not only do you want to avoid stepping on anyone, but if you get a run in your stocking, it will take an army of silkworms (not to mention an entire hosiery mill) to create a replacement.
