This photo of Carole Lombard wearing an Asian-style hat was taken by William Walling, a Paramount staff photographer. Two samples of their teamwork are now available through eBay...and while we've run both portraits before, they're well worth revisiting. (And for those of you who are curious, the hat was designed by Connie Foster.)
Walling and Lombard collaborated frequently -- not only at Paramount, but at Universal, where Walling would work extensively in the 1940s and '50s. When Carole went there in 1936 for "My Man Godfrey," Walling dropped by to take some stills. (I'm not certain whether she requested his services, or he went there at Universal's behest.) Anyway, this was one of the results:
This single-weight original measures an oversized 11" x 14"; according to the seller, "There is a small tear on the right border and a small area of creasing in the right lower corner." Nevertheless, it's stunning.
You can buy it now for $400 or try your hand at bidding -- the minimum bid is $99.99, and bids will close at 7:31 p.m. (Eastern) on Saturday. Find out more at http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carole-Lombard-SENSATIONAL-Oversized-Hollywood-Portrait-/130759382898?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e71ddd772.
The year after "Godfrey," back on Paramount turf, Walling again captured Carole in a hat, this time male headwear that beautifully blends with Lombard's feminine charm. You know it better as p1202-1620:
This is an 8" x 10" original with no snipe (but a few pencil markings on the back, according to the seller), and is available only through the "buy it now" option for $199.95. We'll leave with one more example of Walling's work -- this delightful shot of Carole with co-stars Fred MacMurray and Una Merkel promoting their upcoming film, "True Confession":
