An eBay seller known as the "seattle_washington_archive" is selling six original Carole Lombard (or Lombard-related; we'll explain that one later) photos with a opening bid price of $9.88. You don't have much time to pursue them, either, as bidding on all six closes between 6:09 and 6:13 p.m. (Eastern) on Sunday. As of this writing, four have no bids, two have one each.
That includes the above, a black-and-white publicity photo from Carole's 1937 Technicolor comedy hit "Nothing Sacred." To prove it's original, here's what's on the reverse:
Don't know which town's Liberty Theatre the 1938 snippet was referring to (many burgs had a theater by that name), but the "Poncho" listing for 1976 was -- and is -- a beloved repertory house in Seattle.
A June 1938 photo of Lombard with Clark Gable at the Northridge horse show is not uncommon, but it's nonetheless interesting to see the snipe on the back:
The next four images are tinged with sadness, however, as they were issued after that fateful evening of Jan. 16, 1942. In this one, Lombard is "feared dead":
Later, after her death was confirmed, this pic of her at the Indianapolis bond rally was sent. We now know it wasn't the last photo of Lombard, of course:
About a month later, as "To Be Or Not To Be" neared its arrival in theaters, this portrait of Carole with Jack Benny was issued:
Now that "Lombard-related" photo I earlier mentioned. Carole had many fans in Great Britain (we've run many a UK magazine cover of her as proof), and in her memory, one of the ambulances of the British Volunteer Ambulance Corps featured a plaque, presented by United Artists, which produced "To Be Or Not To Be":
