If Carole Lombard looks perturbed, perhaps she has every reason to be. After gliding to an easy win over Gail Patrick in the first round of the "Funny Ladies" division of the Silents/1930s bracket of the 2012 Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tourney, top-seeded Carole is having a devil of a time with fourth seed Jean Arthur in the semifinals. I expected this to be a tougher match than the opener, but Lombard is in very real danger of being ousted. As of 12:45 a.m. (Eastern) Friday, Carole is trailing Jean Arthur, 50-46. (The winner will likely face second seed Myrna Loy, as she's trouncing Jean Harlow, 59-20.)
The deficit is not insurmountable, however, and a strong response from Lombard fans can tip the balance in her favor. All you have to do is go to http://mythicalmonkey.blogspot.com and vote before 10 p.m. (Eastern) on Saturday.
In the other Silents/'30s division, "Singers/Dancers," it's almost certainly going to be Ginger Rogers vs. Irene Dunne in the finals. Third seed Rogers is far ahead of #7 Hattie McDaniel, 57-19, while #1 Dunne is getting things done, routing #4 Jeanette MacDonald, 71-11.
To encourage you to vote, just look at Lombard's face. Yes, she's generally a sweet, affable soul, but do you really want to risk getting her mad?
