Carole Lombard's lone film for MGM, 1934's "The Gay Bride" -- which is hardly a classic but better than Lombard made it out to be -- is the subject of today's entry. You can get the above image at a large size, or at a small one.
Big things first. An 18" x 24" reproduction of that poster is now being auctioned at eBay, with bids beginning at $9.99; bids will close at 7:34 p.m. (Eastern) on Saturday. It's when this poster is shrunk to 1 3/4" x 2 3/4" that things get interesting. Why would anyone reduce that lovely Lombard image to such a size? To make it fit onto a stainless steel case one-half inch deep, that's why.
As the seller explains, "All work is done in our Central California studio. After the image is inserted, the top is filled with a crystal-clear, waterproof, UV-resistant glossy polymer. This makes the image amazingly vivid and virtually indestructible."
And what can you use the case for (the pill-holding insert is removable)? The seller has some suggestions: "The case is perfect for medication, vitamins, coins, condoms, or other small items that seem to always disappear. The polished steel inside lid makes a great mirror. The case comes wrapped in plastic, boxed, and gift-wrapped with a blank gift card."
Oh, and speaking of condoms, the seller -- whose either has a puckish sense of humor or is steeped in political correctness -- lists this as a "Lesbian Bride, Carole Lombard, COIN MINT PILL BOX." (We assume the seller is aware that Lombard, who likely had her share of lesbian friends, was not one herself. Just to set the record straight, pardon the pun.)
Have some same-sex pals who are tying the knot in New York state or Iowa? This would make a fine wedding present. And curiously, its price is the same as the opening bid for the poster above -- $9.99.
At last check, three of these tiny metal boxes were available. To get one, go to http://cgi.ebay.com/Lesbian-Bride-Carole-Lombard-COIN-MINT-PILL-BOX-/160629774854?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256647da06
This week's header shows a cheery Carole on the phone, in a publicity still from "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
