Pitching a gem, and a gem of a picture

Forgive me if I'm feeling a bit giddy today, but as a Washington Nationals fan I have every right to be. Stephen Strasburg, the much-hyped phenom the Nats drafted roughly a year ago, made his major-league debut last night...and not only justified the hype, but exceeded it. He went seven innings and gained the win as the Nats defeated Pittsburgh, allowing just four hits (one of them a two-run homer, the only runs the Pirates would score), no walks and 14 strikeouts. Those K's were the most by a Nats pitcher since the franchise's arrival in 2005 and tied for the most in the majors this year.

Will Strasburg's outings always be this good? Of course not. But it's obvious he is a special pitcher, with as much maturity as velocity. Washington baseball fans, a star-crossed lot (no pennants since 1933, no pennant races since 1945, heck, even 33 summers without a team), have every reason to feel that for once, fate is on their side.

With that out of the way, here's today's Carole Lombard-related item.

Normally, when I peruse Lombard items on eBay, I'll go by the category "ending soonest." But now that there are often up to 1,700 items, I decided to try a different angle today, categorizing by "highest cost." And consequently, I came up with this:

It's an 11" x 14" autographed photo, a silver gelatin matte finish print, that Carole signed for someone named "Syd." The message reads, "To Syd, Thank you for your ________ to me. Always, Carole." I think the word I can't make out is "kindness," but I'm not 100 percent sure.

The seller concedes it's not perfect -- slight creases and discolorations -- but on the whole, it's beautiful. And, as you might guess, also expensive. You can buy it for $1,425; see it at http://cgi.ebay.com/Movie-Actress-Carole-Lombard-Signed11x14-Photo-/320532618288?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa13b9c30. The item will be up through 11:39 a.m. (Eastern) Sunday, just hours before Strasburg's next scheduled start, in Cleveland.
