Chances are this is the image your mind's eye conjures up when "Carole Lombard" and "Pathe stills" are mentioned: A racy photo, invariably by William E. Thomas, with Lombard revealing lots and lots of skin, though no nudity.
The truth was more complicated, as it normally is.
Thomas could capture both Lombard's sensuality and her more sublime moments. A heretofore unseen Pathe image makes that evident -- CL-171:
Lombard's wearing a light summery dress, likely without stockings. And in case you're skeptical it's her, I've enlarged the face. Convinced?
Yet another from the George Smoots collection, this 8" x 10" original vintage single-weight glossy is said to be in excellent condition.
One bid has been made, for $39-99; the auction is set to end at 9:44 p.m. (Eastern) Sunday.
