'Confessions' about a magazine cover that isn't

And this has nothing to do with Carole Lombard's final film for Paramount (titled "True Confession," no "s"), which put her on the cover in February 1938...

...and also released a tie-in seen above. Rather, this deals with the April 1936 issue where Carole graced the cover (https://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/833806.html):

How'd you like to own this portrait, sans much of the printed copy? It turns out you can. It's not a photograph, nor is it original, and it's rather large. That's because it became a painting not long back:

The painting, minus a frame, measures 19 1/2" x 23 1/2"; add the frame, and it's 22" x 25 3/4". It's impeccable, as several close-ups show:

The artist, Jeff Mundy, has a remarkable background. He previously worked in customer service and catering; in 2010 he moved to China to train corporate flight attendants. But he's also interested in the performing arts, writing songs for Broadway musicals and painting.

While in China, he began a series of portraits titled "Silver Screen," a tribute to movie magazine covers of the Golden Age. His format is to rework the images without the cover copy aside from the title and price. For example, here's an after-and-before of what he did with a Joan Crawford cover of Silver Screen from October 1933:

One of his subjects was "It" girl and '20s icon Clara Bow, whose magazine cover evolved into a 3' x 4' painting:

He became fascinated with Bow and her story (not difficult to do) and recalls, "I realized that this woman was a musical in the making." So he contacted a composer friend, Barry Fasman, and persuaded him to collaborate on the project. The result:

Here are Fasman (left) and Mundy:

Getting back to the Lombard oil portrait -- which I "confess" is beautiful -- its asking price is $775, although you can make an offer.
