Carole on the cover -- knock on wood

If you look at some of the films Carole Lombard made, particularly early in her career, you could argue that a number of her leading men were wooden. But none of them remotely compared to one of Carole's co-stars on radio -- that's because he really was wooden.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...Carole Lombard and Charlie McCarthy!

Lombard and Edgar Bergen's famed dummy were no strangers to each other; she guested on the Bergen-McCarthy radio show several times, though unfortunately only one of the broadcasts has apparently survived ( It's possible scripts from some of the other shows are extant, giving us an idea of how Carole interacted with the good-natured, but occasionally bawdy, wooden boy. (And for those who don't know, actress Candice Bergen is Edgar's daughter, although she wasn't born until 1946.)

That's not the only Lombard-related item in the magazine. Inside is a pictorial on one of her two films then in theaters, "True Confession" (the other was "Nothing Sacred"):

The magazine is available on eBay (, with bidding starting at $34.99 and going through Saturday. Or you can buy it straight up for $39.99. If you're a sufficiently avid Lombard fan, buying this won't make you feel like a dummy...unless you get yourself a monocle and top hat.
