Today marks the 107th anniversary of the birth of Louis Armstrong, the man who taught us all how to swing. And sometime over the next 24 hours, before midnight (ET), this is what I want you to do: go to this site -- http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/ -- click on the "live broadcast" option, and listen to jazz's most beloved figure, from various times throughout his historic career. Pure musical bliss.
I've written about Armstrong before (http://community.livejournal.com/carole_and_co/18876.html), and there's not much I can add, except this: if you're ever in the Corona section of Queens, N.Y., go visit Louis Armstrong's house, now a museum to the man's life. I toured the place in 2004, and was impressed by both his taste and unpretentiousness.
