These shots were taken beginning in Lombard's late teens, probably ending around the time she reached age 21 and was released from Pathe's roster. Her adult beauty was in its embryonic stage, and she was learning the subtle tricks of photography that would bear fruit in the 1930s.
We'll begin with this photo, CL-127, probably taken sometime in the spring of 1929, where Carol is draped and draped in layers of chiffon:
Later that year, Lombard is enveloped in fur for CL-189, adding a veneer of sophistication to still a relatively young woman:
