By the end of the month, Walter Winchell's hugely popular syndicated column ran this about her. (Lombard had pinch-hit for Winchell as a columnist at the start of August.)
She was the subject of several newspaper editorials:
(That's a tongue-in-cheek reference to Martin Dies, a Democrat from Texas who chaired the House Un-American Activities Committee and was infamous for pursuing alleged left-wing subversives.)
