We all scream for...

Like nearly all of us, Carole Lombard loved ice cream, as this shot from the set of "They Knew What They Wanted" indicates. But suppose she preferred her chocolate, vanilla or strawberry from a cup rather than a cone?

Those of us who grew up with postwar suburbanization well recall the ice cream trucks that went through our neighborhoods, such as this for Good Humor in Chicago in 1965. (In my hometown of Syracuse, we had a local company, Sno-Bird.) And though such trucks existed in the 1930s, many children in search of a frozen treat instead would walk to the corner store and pick up a cup for a nickel or so. And if you were lucky, you might find this as a bonus:

And yes, the inside of the lid had some information too:

So many items related to classic Hollywood are collectibles, and these ice cream lids are no exception. The top three, all for 1935's "Rumba," are from a company in Milton, Mass. The other two, for "Hands Across The Table" (1935) and "Swing High, Swing Low" (1937), are from the Supplee Dairy Company of suburban Philadelphia.

As of this writing, one bid, for $6.50, has been made for the Supplee lids; the auction is scheduled to close at 10 p.m. (Eastern) Monday. As for the trio of "Rumbas," the high (and only) current bid is for $3.50, and this auction wraps up at 3:45 p.m. (Eastern) March 20. In the meantime, how about more ice cream? This time Carole's on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" with co-star Robert Montgomery and Lombard's old "My Man Godfrey" cohort Mischa Auer.
