Want to get 'Wanted'? Go old-school

Here was my introduction to Carole Lombard, more than 34 years ago: Her 1937 screwball comedy "Nothing Sacred" (https://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/814968.html). "That isn't shaped like a DVD package," many of you younger folks may be thinking, and indeed it isn't -- it's something called a videocassette, of the VHS variety. (VHS conquered the rival Beta format at the marketplace, back in the day when video rental stores were on seemingly every corner. Ah, the late 1980s.)

By the late '90s, videocassettes were deemed in the past tense, and by the time 2010 came around, they were on the verge of extinction, followed soon by the stores that stocked them. And unlike vinyl LPs, they don't appear to be making a comeback.

Nevertheless, many have held onto their VHS recorders and players, for the simple reason that more than a few Video titles have for one reason or another not been made available on DVD, much less its upgraded younger sibling Blu-ray.

For example, take the brilliant 13-part "Hollywood" series from 1980, authoritatively detailing the silent era while shooting down many myths about the medium. Rights issues involving the scores of sources it used has prevented it from getting any authorized DVD release (though it thankfully can be seen on YouTube).

Several Lombard films have never had a legitimate DVD issue, including at least one tangled in rights issues...

..."They Knew What They Wanted," a 1940 adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1925 Sidney Howard play starring Lombard and Charles Laughton. It's thus been hard to find (although other regions' DVD formats outside North America have it available). Thankfully, at least one version of it is available on VHS:

As you can see, the packaging is generic, and I make no claim as to its visual or aural quality. But if you've been searching for "They Knew What They Wanted," here's your opportunity. More on the company:

The good news is, bidding begins at a reasonable $4.95. The bad news is the auction is set to end at 12:34 a.m. (Eastern) Tuesday, so please don't dawdle.
