Of keybooks and ham: Carole and Clark's early teaming

Carole Lombard was given second billing at her home base of Paramount when it acquired Clark Gable from MGM for "No Man Of Her Own"; it was part of the deal to borrow the red-hot star. (And Lombard would've been denied that role had Miriam Hopkins not demanded co-billing -- https://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/6840.html.)

So from there, an epochal love affair began, right? No, not quite. While each wasn't satisfied with their mates at the time, they only played lovers on the screen, not off it. Nevertheless, they remained on good terms, saw each other at a variety of functions (including this 1933 event with Constance Talmadge, below), and things began heating up in early 1936.

Several original pics of Clark and Carole from that film now are available via eBay. They come from a "keybook" -- a package of photos linked together for promotional purposes:

This pic, showing them in character rather than real life near a Paramount soundstage, measures 8" x 11" and is a double-weight in very good to fine condition. Bids start at $149 and the auction closes at 5:50 p.m. (Eastern) Saturday. If the first was a bit beyond your means, don't despair -- this pic of Clark and Carole, from the same seller, is substantially cheaper (bidding opens at $88.88). Its auction ends six minutes before the other, and it's also in very good to fine condition. This also was part of the keybook; it's from a post-production wrap party where Lombard presented Gable with a ham. Perhaps Clark's acceptance of her gentle yet needling humor lit a spark for the future.

It too is a double-weight in similar condition to the others. Bidding begins at $149; the auction ends at 6:06 p.m. (Eastern) Saturday.
