The Gables, henpecked

Carole Lombard and Clark Gable's move to ranch life in Encino in 1939 grabbed the attention of the Hollywood press. It helped matters that the couple had not one, but two studios promoting them -- MGM, which naturally focused on Gable...

...and RKO, Lombard's new filmland address. It ran a series on the married couple in late summer 1939. including this picture:

(Sorry for the "eBay scan.")

From the back, we learn the photo was shot by RKO's John Miehle and received at the Hartford Courant on Sept. 10, but it's not a snipe:

That's because it was part of a multiple photo shoot from RKO ("EXCLUSIVE IN YOUR CITY"), sent separately on the studio publicity department's famously weird typewriter. And of course, it promotes Carole's latest film, "In Name Only."

The used vintage photo, borderless, measures 7 1/4" x 9 1/4". It's a glossy single-weight stored away for many years. And now it can be yours.

Bidding open at $22.50, with the auction closing at 9:08 p.m. (Eastern) Monday.
