Thanks for posting this. I recently re-read the Donald Spoto biography after you had mentioned it and found the contrasting takes on Dietrich/Lombard perplexing. The Dietrich quote in Riva's book about Lombard's death reflected Dietrich's tasteless tendencies, and its tone contradicted Spoto's claim that Lombard's death added to Dietrich's feelings of "dejection" after she turned forty. Comparing the two bios, I wonder whether Dietrich's cattiness stemmed from Lombard apparently spurning her advances.
